Artibonite, Gonaïves

With the origin an Indian village called Gonaibo. Called today "The City of Independence", because Dessalines proclaimed the Independance of Haiti here, on January 1, 1804. Fourth town of Haiti; Chief town of the Department of Artibonite; District with 3 communes; Sit of the Diocese of Gonaives

Places of iterests

La Vallée de l'Artibonite: store house of the country, rice plantations, colonials sugar canes refineries.

Marchand Dessalines: first capital after the Independence, old fortifications, the cave of Jean-Zinga.

Saint-Marc: Colonial church, a wonderful beach (Amani-les-Bains).
