North, Cap-Haïtien

Situated on the North coast of Haiti the town of Cap-Haitien is situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Morne du Cap. Founded in 1670 on the site of Taino village it took until 1711 for the modest bucaneers to elevate to the rank of Ville Coloniale, under the name of Cap Français. The town flourished thanks to the intense concentration of the Plaine du Nord thru cheap slave labor. The Town earned the name of Paris of Saint-Domingue.

The fascinating tapestry of Haiti's history can be traced fom this schenic, north coast town. A few miles inland are Sans Souci and la Citadelle, two mighty achievements restored and cited as National Patrimoines by UNESCO, that standsas powerful monuments to Haiti's declaration of freedom.

Besides history,Cap-Haitien has a colonial architecture, art galleries, beaches and the nearby village of Labadie, where 260 delicate acres include five spectacular beaches, exotic foliage and dramatic rock formations...a paradise for divers, snorkelers and nature lovers.

Towering above Sans Souci is the awe-inspiring La Citadelle, known as the Eight Wonder of the World. The giant fortress, whose 20' thick walls armed with 400 cannons, took 20,000 men 13 years to complete, still waits for the invaders that never came and today welcomes visitors from around the world.
