Commemoration of the 10-year Anniversary of the Earthquake of January 12, 2010
On January 12, 2020, the Embassy of the Republic of Haiti in Washington DC, organized a couple of events to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the devastating January 12, 2010 earthquake that caused the death of more than 300,000 people and left hundreds of thousands injured and 1.5 million displaced.
The first commemorative event was a mass at the Sacred Heart Church offered by His Excellency Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio, current representative of the Pope in the United States, who had previously been of service in Haiti. This event came together with the commendable collaborative efforts of the Clergy and the Haitian Renewal Alliance. The space provided a safe haven where hundreds of members of the community prayed and paid their respects in honor of the victims of the tragedy. Before the end of the service, the Ambassador, H.E. Hervé Denis, was invited to speak from the heart. During his remarks, he spoke not only of the admirable resiliency of the Haitian people but also, of the important role the Diaspora has played, and continues to play, in the rebuilding efforts of the Nation.
The second event, which followed the service, was held at the Embassy where the doors were opened to the Community. The Ambassador also welcomed some very special guests which included Ambassador Léon Charles, Representative of the Republic of Haiti to the Organization of the American States (OAS), Mr. Justin Viard, the General Consul of the Republic of Haiti in Boston, Mr. Kenneth Merten, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary from the Department of State, Mr. Alfred Metellus, Counselor for the office of Argentina and Haiti from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and Mrs. Ketleen Florestal, Counselor for the Administrator for Haiti at the International Monetary Fund and at World Bank Group, among many more.
Inspired by the remembrance spirit, a collaborative art initiative was launched during the event. The community was invited to write down the names of the loved ones they have lost during the earthquake. Haitian artist and professor at the American University, Charles Jean Pierre, will then use these names to create works of art that will be displayed at the Embassy.

Commémoration du 10ème Anniversaire du Tremblement de terre du 12 janvier 2010
Le 12 janvier 2020, l’Ambassade de la République d’Haïti à Washington DC a organisé deux événements pour commémorer le 10ème anniversaire du destructif tremblement de terre du 12 janvier 2010 qui a causé la mort de plus de 300, 000 personnes et a laissé des centaines de milliers de blessés et 1,5 million de déplacés.
Le premier événement commémoratif fut une messe à l’Eglise du Sacré-Cœur, offerte par Son Excellence Christophe Pierre, Nonce Apostolique, actuel représentant du Pape aux États-Unis, qui fut, il y a quelques années, de service en Haïti. Cet événement fut réalisé grâce à une louable collaboration avec le Clergé et la Haitian Renewal Alliance. L’espace a fourni un havre de paix où des centaines de membres de la communauté ont prié et rendu hommage aux victimes de la tragédie. Avant la fin du service, l’Ambassadeur Hervé Denis a été invité à prendre la parole du fond du cœur. Durant ses propos, l’Ambassadeur a parlé non seulement de l’admirable résilience du peuple haïtien, mais aussi du rôle important que la Diaspora a joué, et continue de jouer, dans les efforts de reconstruction de la Nation.
Le deuxième événement, qui a suivi le service, a eu lieu à l’Ambassade où les portes ont été ouvertes à la Communauté. L’Ambassadeur a également accueilli des invités très spéciaux, dont l’Ambassadeur Léon Charles, Représentant de la République d’Haïti auprès de l’Organisation des États américains (OEA), M. Justin Viard, Consul Général de la République d’Haïti à Boston, M. Kenneth Merten, Sous-Secrétaire Adjoint Principal du Département d’État, M. Alfred Metellus, Conseiller pour le bureau de l’Argentine et d’Haïti de la Banque interaméricaine de développement (BID), et Mme Ketleen Florestal, Conseillère de l’Administrateur pour Haïti au Fonds monétaire international et au Groupe de la Banque mondiale, parmi beaucoup d’autres.
Inspirée par l’esprit du souvenir, une initiative artistique collaborative a été lancée au cours de l’événement. La communauté a été invitée à écrire les noms des êtres chers qu’ils ont perdus pendant le tremblement de terre. L’artiste haïtien et professeur à l’Université américaine, Charles Jean Pierre, utilisera ensuite ces noms pour créer des œuvres d’art qui seront exposées à l’Ambassade.
