Guetty Felin: Filmmaker

SA500018Born in Port-au-Prince Haiti, raised in New York and came of age cinematically in Paris France, Guetty Felin is not only a multi-talented cineaste but also a tireless advocate and activist for Haiti’s cultural heritage. Guetty is the brainchild of Haiti On Screen; an unprecedented film series that commemorated the Haiti bi-centennial in 2004. The series was a tremendous success and moved on in Paris under the title of Haiti en Seine. That same year she was brought on as the head programmer for the Jacmel Film Festival, she went on to program all three editions until 2006, and to organize filmmaking workshops which in many ways planted the seeds for today’s burgeoning film community in the Sud Est.

In 2007, Guetty co-founded BelleMoon Productions and Distribution; a very independent, emerging and dynamic multimedia company. This past fall, BelleMoon produced a series of videos on Haitian Artists for the major unprecedented art exhibition Haiti, Deux Siecles de Creations Artistique at the Grand Palais in Paris which opened on November 19 and will run until February 19, 2015.

broken stonesIn 2011 she turned her very own lenses on her native land with her multi-award winning documentary Broken Stones.

Broken Stones which was shown at the Embassy in January 2013 is a film about self recovery after the earthquake entirely shot in the ruins of the Cathedral Notre Dame de Port-au-Prince.

Guetty’s latest project Ayiti Mon Amour(AQ) a poetic three-story feature narrative about life after disaster.

Ayiti mon amourGuetty is calling Ayiti Mon Amour (AQ) “a magic neorealist tale.” In the backdrop of this poetic magical film, she explores how climate change, coastal erosion, and marine pollution are affecting the social and economic dynamics of the fishing village on Southeastern coast of Haiti where the majority of the film takes place. Guetty’s goal is to return this coming January to Jacmel.

After four years in development, last spring she took the decision to make the project by any means necessary, she convinced family members who work in the film industry to donate their time and come and help jump-start the film.

To fund the completion of Ayiti Mon Amour(AQ) she turned to Indiegogo, a crowd-funding site, which allows contributors to receive all kinds of gifts for their donation. Guetty is giving away, films, coffee, T-shirts jewelry VIP invites to film premiere and after party. The campaign is for one month only until January 9th. Guetty would like for the film to be a people-powered project that she hopes will be funded by the Haitian community and everyone with some ties to Haiti. She hopes to submit the film to prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Venice and Toronto.

“Ayiti Mon Amour is a love poem to my native land; a place that I ache for, that haunts me, that frightens and yet angers me, a place that I am fiercely and madly in love with”.
